Hot Summers,
Keeping Cool
Long hot summer days can not only be hard on humans, but also on livestock.
Extreme heat can cause animals to dehydrate and go off their normal feeding
habits, stressing them until sickness or death occurs.
Livestock out on pasture or confined to a pen should have plenty of fresh
water at all times. Most pastures in this area have ponds or creeks in them,
which is ideal because animals will get in them to cool off. However a
fresh water supply is also helpful in supplying clean drinking water.
Trees or a shed provide a cool area for animals to get out of the sun.
A lot of show animals are confined to a barn. In this case, fans and misters
can be used to keep them cool.
